PROMIS INTEGRATION

BrightOutcome works closely with the NIH’s landmark PROMIS initiative to develop solutions for integrating Patient Reported Outcomes in the care process. Integration with PROMIS instruments (both adaptive and static instruments) is under development, and will be offered by default in our Version 4.0, 2Q09.

What PROMIS is, and why it’s important
PROMIS stands for Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System. This is a 5-year (2004-2009), $25MM National Institutes of Health initiative to “establish a national resource for accurate and efficient measurement of patient-reported symptoms and other health outcomes in clinical research and practice.”

PROMIS began as part of a cooperative network formed by a group of outcomes scientists from seven institutions and the NIH, funded under the NIH Roadmap Initiative to re-engineer the clinical research enterprise.

Expanding beyond clinical research, one of its charters is to establish a publicly available, adaptable and sustainable internet-based system that will:

  • Administer individual tailored questionnaires that measure a patient’s health status.
  • Collect the patients’ responses through multiple modalities.
  • Provide instant health status reports to patients and health care providers to improve decision making.

BrightOutcome has been working closely with PROMIS on the development of electronic data standards for PROMIS “item banks.”
